The conditions were perfect, the team was strong and the result was groovy. Maybe not super groovy, but groovy nonetheless. The Team Beyer Auto senior racing squad, with a couple new additions, is coming together nicely. With a win, a podium and two top tens so far in our MABRA races. A fourth place in the All American Road Race is especially heartening considering some would consider our squad more suited to criteriums and circuit races. Many thanks to our supporters and teammates who provided feeds during the race and as always, a huge thanks to our sponsorsfor keeping the wheels rolling.
Suffice to say that an average speed of just under 26mph for the 80 mile race made it pretty tough to break away. Although not for lack of trying. The team for the day consisted of Kris Stein, Brian Marchionini, Ryan McKinney, Jason Meidhof, Paul Mica, Mark Hyatt, Neil Markus, Mark Sommers, DJ Brew, and Paul Mittelstadt. We were represented in every move all day. Huge applause to Neil Markus for stepping up and staying active all day (even working the final lead-out) in what he called "the hardest and most fun race I have ever done!!!" He was certainly the MVP on the day. Also a huge, impressive effort was made my Mark Hyatt in the closing laps, staying off the front solo with a chasing field, taking the pressure off the rest of the squad. Discussing the effort after the race he noted, in his usual understated manner, "I was just feeling good and wanted to keep going." Easy to say with the field cranking behind you at 26 miles an hour after 70 miles!
The team spent the final lap as the only squad organized enough to reel in a late breakaway and set up DJ for the sprint. The final lead-out was left perhaps a bit too early but Brew stayed in the fight to the line with some of the fastest guys around and finished a strong fourth. We are please with the result and the effort of the team. More racing to come.
